The Writers Guild Of Great Britain holds an awareness to support the writers strike in Hollywood

Standing with the 11 500 striking writers in America, the Writer Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) on Wednesday joined writer and other workers in the media sector for a day of “ Screenwriters Everywhere.”

“Screenwriters everywhere” was a global day of solidarity with striking Hollywood writers. The protest which took place in central London was to support the 11 500, members of Writers Guild America West and Writer Guild of America East (WGA), who have been on strike since May 2.

The WGGB president Sandi Toksvig, ( author and former host of The Big Bake Off) chairperson Lisa Holdsworth ( A Discovery Of witches, Call the Midwife) were there along with writers like Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Enola Holmes) Russell T Davis ( Doctor Who, Queer as Folk) among others, in raising awareness for the writer’s strike.

Also present were members of fellow Federation of Entertainment Unions, including Equity, Bectu the Musicians’ Union and the NUJ were also present.

“I’m proud to go out on the streets today, shoulder to shoulder with my fellow WGGB members and others from across the industry, to send a loud message of solidarity to our colleagues on strike the U.S,” said Holdsworth. “We believe in better pay and working conditions for creators, improved payments on streaming services, protections against free work, and safeguards around artificial intelligence to protect compensations and creative rights,” she added.

Holdsworth also condemned Hollywood giants pointing out, “Media conglomerates are making billions in profit, yet refusing to share that with writers and other creative workers.”

“Everything starts with the writer, and we need to make sure that those who profit from the creative brilliance of writers, share those profits with writers, so they be paid properly, enjoy fair working conditions and be treated with dignity and respect,” stressed Toskvig.

The day ended with a conlusion from Toskvig, “On this Global Day of Solidarity, I would like to join my fellow union members in the U.K. in sending this message to screenwriters across the Atlanta, we support you and we stand with you.

The event was also held in more than twenty other countries including at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, Eiffel Tower in France, Cologne Cathedral in Germany, to mention but a few.

The WGA had its first strike fifteen years ago, amidst a lack of agreement with the Alliance of motion picture and television producers about viewership-based residuals, the use and regulation of artificial intelligence and minimum staffing for writers rooms. Some of these issues have been the same cause of the current strike.
